Prophecy Against Babylon

3 I have commanded my sanctified ones, I have also called my mighty ones for mine anger, even them that rejoice in my highness. Parallel theme: Joel 3:11

4 The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD of hosts mustereth the host of the battle. References Lord: Joel 3:14. Parallel theme: Joel 2:25

5 They come from a far country, from the end of heavenHeaven: שָׁמַיִם (Shamayim). The Hebrew shamayim (שָׁמַיִם) means heaven or sky—God's dwelling place and the realm above earth. 'The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD's' (Psalm 115:16), yet 'the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him' (1 Kings 8:27)., even the LORD, and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land. 6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORDLord: יְהוָה / אֲדֹנָי (YHWH / Adonai). When 'LORD' appears in small capitals, it represents the Tetragrammaton YHWH (יְהוָה), God's personal covenant name meaning 'I AM.' When 'Lord' appears normally, it's Adonai (אֲדֹנָי), meaning 'my Lord,' emphasizing sovereignty. is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty. 9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrathWrath: אַף (Aph). The Hebrew aph (אַף) literally means 'nose' or 'nostrils,' idiomatically expressing wrath or anger—God's righteous indignation against sin. Yet God is 'slow to anger' (Exodus 34:6) and 'abundant in mercy.' and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. 11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquityIniquity: עָוֹן (Avon). 15 Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword.
