The Seven Seals

1 And I saw when the LambLamb: ἀμνός / ἀρνίον (Amnos / Arnion). The Greek amnos (ἀμνός) means lamb. John declared Jesus 'the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world' (John 1:29). In Revelation, Christ is the slain Lamb (arnion) who alone is worthy to open the scroll. opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. 5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. Parallel theme: Revelation 5:5, 5:9, 6:1, Leviticus 26:26, Ezekiel 4:16, Zechariah 6:2, 6:6 +2

6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine. Parallel theme: Revelation 9:4

7 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. Parallel theme: Revelation 4:7, 6:3

8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. Word: Jeremiah 16:4, Ezekiel 5:12. 9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the wordWord: λόγος (Logos). The Greek Logos (Λόγος) means word, reason, or message—the rational principle underlying reality. John identifies Christ as the eternal Logos: 'In the beginning was the Word' (John 1:1). of God, and for the testimony which they held: References God: John 16:2. Word: Revelation 1:2, 1:9, 20:4. 10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holyHoly: ἅγιος (Hagios). The Greek hagios (ἅγιος) denotes holiness—moral purity and separation unto God. Believers are called 'saints' (hagioi), those set apart for God through Christ's sanctifying work. and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? The Sixth Seal

12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as bloodBlood: αἷμα (Haima). The Greek haima (αἷμα) denotes blood. Christ's blood 'cleanseth us from all sin' (1 John 1:7), securing 'eternal redemption' (Hebrews 9:12) through His once-for-all sacrifice. 13 And the stars of heavenHeaven: οὐρανός (Ouranos). The Greek ouranos (οὐρανός) denotes heaven—God's throne and the believer's eternal home. Jesus taught His disciples to pray 'Our Father which art in heaven' (Matthew 6:9) and promised to prepare a place there (John 14:2). fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. 16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrathWrath: ὀργή (Orgē). The Greek orgē (ὀργή) means wrath—settled, righteous anger against sin.
