Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
God gave a sign that would unmistakably point to divine intervention in human history.
The virgin birth wasn't just a miracle for its own sake—it was necessary for the incarnation of God's Son. Only through this supernatural conception could Christ be both fully human and fully divine, born without inherited sin yet sharing our nature. The name Immanuel, revealed here seven centuries before Jesus, declares God's intention to personally bridge the gap between Himself and humanity.
