Jeremiah 46:27

Chapter Context

Jeremiah 46 is a prophetic oracle chapter in the Old Testament that explores themes of truth, redemption, discipleship. Written during the final years of Judah and early exile (c. 627-580 BCE), this chapter should be understood within its historical context: Prophesied during Judah's final years as Babylon became the dominant power.

The chapter can be divided into several sections:

  1. Verses 1-5: Introduction and setting the context
  2. Verses 6-12: Development of key themes
  3. Verses 13-20: Central message and teachings
  4. Verses 21-28: Conclusion and application

This chapter is significant because it foreshadows Christ's work through typology and prophetic elements. When studying this passage, it's important to consider both its immediate context within Jeremiah and its broader place in the scriptural canon.

Jeremiah 46:27

27 But fear not thou, O my servant Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save thee from afar off, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and be in rest and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.

Analysis

'Fear not, O Jacob my servant' appears frequently in prophetic literature (Isa 41:10, 44:2). Despite judgment, God's ultimate purpose is restoration. The phrase 'I will save thee from afar' acknowledges the distance of exile but affirms God's ability to reach across it. No distance separates God's people from His saving power (Rom 8:38-39).

Historical Context

This promise looks beyond immediate judgment to ultimate restoration. God's covenant with Jacob/Israel remains intact despite discipline.

Reflection

  • How does God's promise 'fear not' speak to your current anxieties?
  • What does it mean that God saves from 'afar' - that distance doesn't limit His power?
