The Crucifixion
Jesus is beaten, mocked, and nailed to a cross between two thieves. In His final hours, He forgives His enemies and commits His spirit to the Father.
They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means 'the place of the skull'). There they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him.
It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS. They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left.
Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.'
One of the criminals hanging beside him hurled insults at him: 'Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!'
But the other criminal rebuked him. 'Don't you fear God, since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, but this man has done nothing wrong.' Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.'
Jesus answered him, 'Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.'
Near the cross stood Jesus' mother Mary and the disciple whom he loved. When Jesus saw his mother there, he said to her, 'Woman, here is your son,' and to the disciple, 'Here is your mother.' From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'
Knowing that everything had now been finished, Jesus said, 'I am thirsty.' He received the drink and said, 'It is finished.'
With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. When the centurion saw what had happened, he praised God and said, 'Surely this was a righteous man.'
